Introduction to Ceramics — 6-Week Beginners Course

Join Kings Hall Pottery for a relaxed, hands-on six-week introduction to ceramics at Chapelizod Art Studio. Designed especially for beginners, this small-group course gives you the opportunity to explore both pottery wheel throwing and hand-building in a friendly, supportive studio environment.

Over six Wednesday evenings, you'll learn the fundamentals of working with clay, from preparing and shaping it to decorating, glazing and firing your finished pieces.

With just 8 places available, you'll receive plenty of individual guidance from your tutor while having the freedom to experiment and develop your own style.

What you'll learn

Across the six weeks, you'll be introduced to:

• 🏺 Wheel throwing — learn to centre clay and make simple cylinders, bowls and vessels
• ✋ Hand-building — explore pinch pots, coiling and slab construction
• 🎨 Surface decoration — experiment with texture, carving and underglazes
• ✨ Glazing — learn how to apply glazes and prepare your work for firing
• 🔥 The firing process — understand how your pieces go from raw clay to finished ceramics
• 🧰 Studio skills — learn how to use tools safely and care for your workspace

Your six weeks

Week 1, 11th of nov: Introduction to clay & hand-building
Week 2, 18th of nov: Your first experience on the pottery wheel
Week 3, 25th of nov: Throwing bowls & vessels
Week 4, 2nd of dec: Hand-building & surface decoration
Week 5, 9th of dec: Glazing & final wheel session
Week 6, 16th of dec: Finishing, glazing & next steps

You'll create a collection of your own pieces throughout the course, giving you the chance to practise different techniques and see your skills develop from week to week.

Under 18s

Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a participating adult for the duration of the course. The accompanying adult must also book and participate in the course.

Who is this course for?

Absolutely no previous ceramics experience is necessary. Whether you've always wanted to try the pottery wheel, enjoyed making things with your hands, or simply fancy learning something new, this course is a great place to start.

You'll learn in a small group, with plenty of time to practise, experiment and ask questions.
